Kids should drink water. So when your children are thirsty, instead of giving them juice and milk—both of which are nutritious and should be drunk every day, try giving them a nice cool glass of water. Water is the one liquid that helps distribute nutrients throughout the body, which makes sense when you consider that our bodies comprise about 80% water. In short, without drinking a sufficient amount of water daily, our children’s health may be compromised.

The rule of thumb to ensure your kids are drinking enough water is about one quart per 1,000 calories they expend (for children aged 1 or 2 and up. Infants shouldn’t drink water, except when mixed with formula). And most pediatricians recommend monitoring your children’s thirst needs. Give them water in between meals if they seem thirsty and watch their urine output.

Kids in sports: Be sure to fill their water bottles. Younger children don’t tolerate high temperatures as well as adults and can get dehydrated faster. Water helps regulate their body temperatures, which is especially important if your kids are active.

Overall health: Water is essential in helping with digestion, maintaining good blood circulation, and protecting joints and muscle.  Water also maintains sodium balance.

Water & weight:  The number of obese children in the U.S. has risen steadily over the last decade. While many factors come into play, sugary drinks such as sodas and juice are major culprits. This is another reason to encourage kids to drink water in between meals. And try to give them foods that contain water, such as lettuce and celery. Even meat, fish, or chicken contains up to one-half their weight in water.

If you’re unsure about how much water your child should drink daily, check with your child’s physician. Fluid intake needs differ, depending on your child’s activity level and/or special dietary needs.  You might also want to have your tap water tested (whether it comes from your area’s public water supply or a well) to ensure that it doesn’t contain a lot of heavy metals. Some people will add a water filter to remove metals, or purchase water ionizers that remove all drinking water impurities; however, some of these products may also remove fluoride, which is necessary for children up to age 14 for strong, cavity-resistant teeth.

Good news: By drinking enough water and eating certain foods, some regeneration of healthy cells and tissues may occur, which may also ease arthritis pain.

Approximately 1 in 3 adults in the US have some form of arthritis or chronic joint pain. And while there are many causes for tissue to degenerate, research has shown that high acidity in the blood may dissolve the cartilage in joints, causing inflammation and pain.

So what’s good? Any food containing omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and herring, walnuts, flax seeds,  canola and extra-virgin olive oils also seem to be beneficial.  And be sure to get a good dose of vitamin C-rich foods—hot chili peppers, guavas, bell peppers, dark leafy vegetables, fresh herbs, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, papayas, kiwi, oranges, tangerines, and strawberries.

Foods high in selenium, like Brazil nuts, shellfish, sunflower seeds, bran, and even liver, pork chops, and bacon, help reduce pain in muscles and joints. Other foods like onions, leeks and tart cherries contain quercetin, which has shown to inhibit inflammation. And don’t forget to drink your green tea as the antioxidant compounds reduce the severity of arthritis.

One thing to watch out for is eating too many foods containing omega-6 fatty acids, which actually can increase inflammation. While a good balance of omega-3s and omega-6s is beneficial (omega-6 fatty acids are good for brain function and normal growth), most of us eat way too many omega-6 foods (oils and seeds found in most packaged baked goods and snacks) than are good for our joints. At the very least, think “moderation.”

And water? Drink plenty—about six to eight glasses a day to get those joints lubed and moving freely. For the best water that provides true hydration, think about alkaline ionized water. Since high acidity levels in the blood increase inflammation, drinking alkaline water may help reduce inflammation and ease some arthritic conditions.

After months of pain that began to increase, my friend was diagnosed with mild osteoarthritis in her upper spine/neck area. She could live with the pain, but it also affected her “golf” arm. Looking for another answer, we began working with a noted immunologist in New York who was conducting a clinical trial. Through testing, we discovered David’s acidic blood levels were WAY HIGH.
