Chapter 1 — David’s Story: The Odyssey Begins

My husband, David, and Steve Jobs had one thing in common: Islet cell neuroendocrine/carcinoma of the pancreas. It’s a slow growing pancreatic tumor, unlike pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which is more aggressive and the most common pancreatic cancer. But don’t let islet cell carcinoma fool you; it stealthily meanders and invades the lymph nodes and liver, sometimes the bile ducts and stomach, sometimes the brain and lungs. Once islet cell is diagnosed, depending on myriad variables of one’s overall health, the prognosis is typically five years. Those years may include additional surgeries, chemotherapy, and in Jobs’ case, a liver transplant.

The difference between Jobs and David, however, is that Jobs died after being diagnosed seven years ago; David was diagnosed in 1995 and is still alive. His CT scan in 2003 showed a nearly normal shaped pancreas, and hernia surgery in 2005 allowed his surgeon to visually assess the pancreas, where no cancer was found.

Jobs fought his disease with both traditional and nontraditional treatments. David sought traditional treatment in 1995, but oncologists at The Mayo Clinic advised him not to “do anything until the disease progressed,” as the treatment would be worse than the disease at that point.  While those words were sobering, they convinced us to seek “alternative” treatment.

We chose to work with Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, an immunologist in New York, whose therapies with cancer patients were and remain controversial. After receiving David’s  blood and body chemistry results, Dr. Gonzalez developed an individualized treatment plan which included pancreatic enzymes, nutritional supplements and many organic procedures to detoxify or eliminate the poisons in his system. David’s acidic levels were extremely high (disease just loves an acid environment), so the plan also included therapies to lower his acid pH and restore his alkaline levels.

To increase his alkaline levels, he had to change his diet—mostly vegetarian with some fish and eggs. Meat, fowl, sugar, white flour, rice, etc., are all “acid” foods, so were verboten. He was also ordered only to drink reverse osmosis (RO) water, a purer water and less acidic than what we get from our tap water. For years we purchased gallons of RO water, as we even used it for cooking.  We finally purchased an under-the-counter RO system, which saved us money and trips to the RO machine, but when tested, the water was nearly as acidic as our regular tap water! We decided we needed to make a change and our hunch was the water ionizer machine.

After 16 years on the Gonzalez regimen, my husband’s cancer is gone (we never say cure because cancer is systemic, which is why he continues the diet regimen, nutritional supplements and only drinks “pure” water).

Then we discovered the wonders of water ionizers which instantly turn regular tap water into alkaline water—the purest of pure. Remember: disease cannot grow in an alkaline environment. The properties of healthy alkaline ionized water help the body achieve a proper pH and work to rid free radicals that cause cellular damage and, ulimately, disease. David is currently “clear,” but we don’t want to play with fire so we’re drinking 9.5 pH alkaline water daily.

His journey to remain cancer free continues, and even with a plethora of both traditional and nontraditional cancer treatments available, there are no clear answers about why people continue to get and die from the disease. I’m a firm believer in prevention. Ionized alkaline water is something all of us can use to keep our body’s internal environment as healthy as possible.
